BIOGRAPHY

The figurative and rural landscape artist Stanhope Forbes, later an important member of the influential Newlyn school of landscape painting, was born in Dublin to an English father and French mother. An uncle, the art-collector James Staats Forbes, had a well known collection of contemporary paintings. Stanhope studied fine art painting at Dulwich College, the Lambeth School of Art, then briefly at the Royal Academy Schools.

In London he made friends with Henry La Thangue with whom he painted later in Brittany. After London, Forbes studied figurative drawing and painting in Paris under Leon Bonnat at his art studio in Clichy.

In 1881, he went to St. Malo in Brittany to practice Impressionist-style landscape painting. here he executed A Street in Brittany, which met with considerable success when it was shown at the Royal Academy in 1882. It was purchased by the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool which gave Forbes enormous encouragement in his plein-air painting career.

He returned to Brittany in 1883 staying at Quimperlé and Pont-Aven. Without doubt he would have met several other Irish artists who were painting there at the time, such as: Nathaniel Hill, Walter Osborne, Norman Garstin, and Joseph Malachy Kavanagh. At the Royal Hibernian Academy the following year, he exhibited Breton Children in an Orchard – Quimperle, a picture with obvious similarities to Walter Osborne’s Apple Gathering, Quimperlé, Brittany, shown at the same exhibition.

His Breton paintings – such as “Preparations for the Market, Quimperlé and Fair Measures: a Shop in Quimperle were also successfully shown at the Royal Academy.

In 1884, at the age of 27, he moved to Newlyn in Cornwall where he settled for the rest of his life. He became one of the central figures of the Newlyn School, which – because of his many successes at the Royal Academy – soon became firmly established. Here he met fellow painter Elizabeth Adela Armstrong (1859-1912) whom he later married. Of his fine art, Norman Garstin wrote: “[Forbes] sees with extraordinary clearness and simplicity, and renders with extraordinary clearness what he sees”.

In 1886 Stanhope Forbes became a founding member of the New English Art Club. He was elected a Royal Academician in 1910, and continued painting with distinction for the rest of his life.

Komali’s Margarita Top in Texas

Back in 1948, a wealthy Dallas socialite, Margarita Sames, held magical parties at her villa in Acapulco. She shook up her favorite ingredients-Cointreau, tequila, and fresh lime juice-into what was to become the classic margarita, a cocktail resplendent in a uniquely shaped, wide-rimmed glass frosted in salt. Here, ten mixologists from establishments known for their signature margaritas take the classic recipe for a spin. You’re invited along for the ride too. Test the recipes with friends at home (see below), and stop in to sample these margaritas on your travels around Texas.

RECIPE

  • 1½ oz. Herradura Reposado tequila
  • ½ oz. Cointreau
  • Juice of ½ fresh lime
  • ½ oz. prickly pear juice
  • Splash of fresh mango puree
  • Finish with splash of lemon-lime soda

Spicy Short Ribs 2 smSpicy food lovers hit a home run at Uptown’s Komali Restaurant.  Chef/Proprietor Abraham Salum and Executive Chef Anastasia Quinones have cooked up a hot dish for the Contemporary Mexican eatery’s summer dinner menu.  Costillas de Puerco (braised pork ribs) with pineapple habanero glaze, queso fresco mashed potatoes, and grilled nopal salad carries a “WARNING: very spicy.”

Other new menu highlights include Squash Blossom Quesadillas, Redfish with Texas Peaches, and Seafood Stew.  For the sweet tooth summer diners can try Coconut Bread Pudding or Strawbery Tres Leches Cake.

While Mixologist Leann Berry’s award-winning margaritas will cool the palate, don’t look for Salum and Quinones to have the ER standing by for those who over-indulge in the new “too hot to handle” dish.  They do promise, however, plenty of other cool menu items.

DALLAS, TX–“When I heard the babies in Moore, Ok., were in desperate need of diapers, wipes, formula and even teddy bears to hug at night, I felt the intense obligation to help seeing that my daughter has all those things and I couldn’t imagine not being able to provide that to her,” says Komali Restaurant executive chef Anastacia Quinones.  The proud mother of a 6-month-old daughter, Quinones pledged to do something about it.

With the help of Komali owner/chef Abraham Salum, who is known for being community minded, as well as a good restaurateur, Quinones developed a plan……

A World of Women for World Peace

With Congeresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson for A World of Women for World Peace panel discussion here at the Fed, I received a couple suprizes…Money

First, all attendees GOT money, which normally flows the oppisite direction!

Second, and more importantly, for the first time the panel included a man… and for good reason.

israel-iranWhen war between Israel and Iran seemed imminent, Israeli graphic designer Ronny Edry shared a poster on Facebook of himself and his daughter with a bold message: “Iranians … we [heart] you.” Other Israelis quickly created their own posters with the same message — and Iranians responded in kind. The simple act of communication inspired surprising Facebook communities like “Israel loves Iran,” “Iran loves Israel” and even “Palestine loves Israel.”

Ronny Edry of Israel accidentally created an online movement for peace in the Middle East when he posted a Facebook image that declared “Iranians, we will never bomb your country.”
